Astro. Oil on wood panel. 8″x 8″

In portraits like this one I mix my own black paint with Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber. This is because I can control the color temperature better than using a black paint straight from the tube. With Astro the highlights on his coat are warm and the shadows are relatively cooler. Using color temperature in this way can help emphasise depth and form.
